The Snow Queen and the Black Mirror

A play about the soul, about joy and suffering, about the courage to feel, the courage to be oneself, about doubts and hope, about what we have forgotten, and about what we will begin to miss only once we lose it. Although inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known fairy tale, Bratislava Puppet Theatre’s production will not be about winter, frost, or snow. At least not literally. It will not be about the cruel Snow Queen, although she will play an important role in it. In this story, Wisdom, Love, Fear, Beauty, and many other characters will appear. Yet none of them will know who they really are. Wisdom will not know that she is Wisdom, Love will not know that she is Love. And neither will you. After all, who knows what Wisdom or Cowardice looks like? You will have to imagine, think, invent, laugh, or cry. Let this story become for everyone whatever it can be for them. Bratislava Puppet Theatre is a place of artistic encounters, communication, and social interaction, where emphasis is placed on quality and on a high artistic as well as human level. The foundation of BBD’s work is an open, flexible, and creative dramaturgy that reflects current themes and events, wider social problems, and the times we live in, thus clearly and legibly defining its standpoint. At the same time, it returns to its roots - to the honest showmanship of old travelling puppeteers, to the wisdom of fairy tales, to the poignancy of clowns, and to the joy of play. Bratislava Puppet Theatre is a magical space that, through art, has the power to lead people toward tolerance and humanity.
